The authorities of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have declined to attend and made calls with US president ‘Joe Biden’ in recent weeks because the US and its representatives are planning to hike the energy prices caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
As per the sources that the Middle East and US officials, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the UAE’s Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan have been inaccessible to Biden after US requests were made for discussions.
As per the US official statement, they had some expectations on a phone call, but it did not happen. “It was part of turning on the spigot [of Saudi oil].”
Last week, OPEC+, which Russia includes, rejected to increase oil production, despite western requests.
But as per, the frigid talks with Saudi Arabia come as the Biden government seeks to increase the oil supply after formally banning the Russian oil imports on Tuesday, pushing oil prices to 130 dollars a barrel, the highest level in 14 years.
Moreover, this is the first time in several years that the US has opened up diplomatic channels with Venezuela, a Russian representative and which has the world’s largest oil reserves. Venezuela has now released two American jailers in an apparent goodwill gesture toward the Biden administration in a possible prelude to increasing production to ease the surge of prices.
However, the US and Saudi Arabia ties have become normal during the Biden government over American policy in the Gulf region.
Issues include:
1. The revival of the Iran nuclear deal.
2. Lack of US support for Saudi intervention in Yemen’s civil war and its refusal to add Houthis to its list of terrorist groups.
3. US help with a Saudi civilian nuclear program.
4. Legal immunity for Prince Mohammed, who is facing lawsuits over the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi by a Saudi hit-team in its Istanbul consulate four years ago.
While contexting elections, he vowed to treat the Kingdom as a ‘Pariah’ state, saying there is very social little socially redeeming value in the present government in Saudi Arabia.”
As per the spokesperson of the White House, ‘Jen Psaki, there is no plans for Biden and Prince Mohammed to talk and even no plans for the president to travel to Riyadh.
