Egypt: Egypt is close to establishing the largest spinning and weaving factory in the world, at a time when the cultivated areas of the strategic crop continued to increase by more than 90% last season.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Egypt’s total cotton exports amounted to 1,761 thousand metric quintals from the beginning of the season to its end in September/August 2021, compared to 874 thousand metric quintals in September/August 2020, with an increase of 101.5%.

The quantity of cotton production increased, reaching 2.3 million metric quintals in 2021, an increase of 33.3% over 2020, and India was the largest importer of Egyptian cotton, with 1.5 million metric kantars, representing 87.3% of the total.

The Egyptian state plans to advance the spinning and weaving industry with the aim of restoring Egyptian cotton to its former glory, especially as it is one of the labour-intensive industries, and the state is currently working on establishing the largest spinning factory in the world in the city of Mahalla. According to the Local Egyptian newspaper.

Dr. Abdel Hakim Nour El-Din, Professor of Agricultural Economics, and former dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Zagazig University, said that reviving the industrial castle in Mahalla El-Kubra will put Egypt in the ranks of industrialized countries, especially since some European countries and America depend on China, East Asia, Egypt and some African countries in the textile industry, and here Egypt has the opportunity to enter strongly into the industry, especially since the Egyptian products are of high quality, in addition to the fact that the use of the latest technological methods in the industry contributes to the processes of mixing cotton and synthetic fibres that are more flexible and soft.
