The prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew, had a great discussion with Columbia University New York students. He spoke on various issues and challenges island countries are currently facing. He also signed the flag of the University of Columbia and inscribed “Become The change we need” on it.
During his stay in New York City, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew met the students of Columbia University first a while he emphasized on the centric role of small island nations. As per him, all the countries across the globe need to make collective efforts to make the world clean and safe by protecting it from negative climate effects.
As per the Prime Minister, the role of a small nation is very significant in light of ongoing environmental threats. Because island nations will first face the heat if anything adverse happens in the climate arena.
Threats are being posed by the adverse effects of climate change. These include rising sea levels and extreme weather events. Prime Minister also discussed with students the intiatives being taken by Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to adopt and promote sustainable practices. Moreover, St Kitts and Nevis are also collaborating with other island countries to fight against climate change.
It is worth mentioning that environmental protection and sustainable development are on the priority list of St Kitts and Nevis, the Prime Minister added.
Threats to the island nation were centric in the speech of the prime Minister. Specifically speaking, the prime Minister said that if timely and immediate steps are not taken on a priority basis, small developing and underdeveloped nations will be in great peril. Moreover, the threat to the coastal nations and island areas is more serious.
The prime Minister also appreciated the view expressed by students on global issues with a special focus on climate change and sustainable development.
The event ended with optimism and appreciation from the prime Minister for students. After the event, the University students asked the Prime minister, Dr Terrance Drew, to sign on the university’s flag. The prime Minister signed the flag and inscribed the words “Become the change we need” on a flag.
