In a bid to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and bolster sustainable transportation infrastructure, Dubai is set to introduce EV charging stations at paid parking zones across the Emirate. 

The initiative, spearheaded by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) in collaboration with Parkin, the largest provider of paid public parking facilities in Dubai, marks a significant stride towards fostering eco-friendly mobility solutions in the region.

Announced on Friday, the partnership between Dewa and Parkin aims to expand the footprint of Dewa’s ‘Green Charger’ stations in prime locations managed by Parkin. 

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the MD & CEO of Dewa, highlighted the soaring numbers of EVs in Dubai, surpassing the 30,000 mark by the end of April 2024. 

Anticipating further growth in EV ownership, Al Tayer emphasized the pivotal role of EV infrastructure expansion to accommodate the burgeoning demand.

The EV Green Charger initiative has witnessed a surge in participation, with over 15,000 registered customers by March 2024. 

Parkin, recognizing the evolving landscape of transportation, is eyeing monetization opportunities in the EV sector. Leveraging its extensive parking network comprising over 197,000 parking spaces in Dubai, Parkin envisages its facilities as crucial nodes in facilitating the transition to EVs.

Highlighting the symbiotic relationship between parking facilities and EV charging, Parkin emphasized the strategic integration of charging services into its growth strategy. 

Parkin aims to incentivize EV adoption among motorists by offering easy access to charging amenities, thereby fortifying its position in the evolving mobility ecosystem.

Since its inception in 2015, the EV Green Charger initiative has powered an impressive cumulative electric vehicle distance of approximately 130 million kilometers. 

Dewa streamlines the charging process by creating EV Green Charger accounts for registered customers upon vehicle registration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai. 

The initiative ensures swift charging within one hour, fostering convenience and accessibility for EV owners.

Moreover, Dewa extends charging privileges to all customers, including unregistered ones, through the guest mode feature. 

This inclusive approach underscores Dewa’s commitment to facilitating EV charging infrastructure development and fostering a sustainable transportation landscape in Dubai.
