Egypt is set to make a major leap toward meeting its renewable energy goals with a landmark wind farm project, expected to provide clean power to over 1.3 million households.

The $1.1 billion initiative, which will be one of the largest of its kind in the country, aims to help Egypt achieve its ambitious target of generating more than 40 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035.

The project, which has secured substantial financial backing, includes $200 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and $170 million from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

This investment is a key step in furthering Egypt’s commitment to cleaner energy and a sustainable future. The wind farm will be designed, constructed, and maintained across two sites, with a total capacity of 550 MW.

The construction phase will commence in January 2025, and the project is expected to be completed by August 2027. Once operational, the wind farm will generate an impressive 4,111 GWh annually.

The electricity produced will supply power to over 1 million households, providing clean, affordable, and reliable energy, while also supporting Egypt’s broader climate change mitigation efforts.

This renewable energy project is poised to make a significant impact on Egypt’s greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that the wind farm will reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 1.71 million tons each year.

The move aligns with Egypt’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement, where the country has vowed to reduce its carbon footprint and invest heavily in renewable energy sources.

In recognition of its strategic importance, the project has been granted the Golden License from the Egyptian Cabinet.

This prestigious license allows for faster administrative processes, including expedited approvals, ensuring that the project moves forward without unnecessary delays.

The license is part of a broader effort by the Egyptian government to encourage private investments in clean energy and accelerate the transition to a greener, more sustainable energy sector.

The wind farm’s impact goes beyond energy generation and emissions reduction. The project is expected to create a wealth of job opportunities, both during the construction phase and in the long-term operation and maintenance stages.

It will also enhance Egypt’s energy security by diversifying the country’s energy mix, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and helping to stabilize energy prices.

With its strategic location and large-scale capacity, this wind farm will play a critical role in Egypt’s goal of increasing its share of renewable energy to 42 percent by 2030.
