Saudi authorities are reportedly working tirelessly to provide German investigators with all available information on Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, the suspect linked to the recent Magdeburg market attack.

Al-Abdulmohsen, who allegedly drove his BMW into a crowd at the Alter Markt in December, has a complex history that includes warnings from the Saudi government about his extremist views, which Germany seemingly ignored.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed frustration over Germany’s lack of response to multiple warnings issued between 2014 and 2016.

These warnings, sent through four official communications known as “Notes Verbal” to German intelligence agencies and the foreign ministry, highlighted al-Abdulmohsen’s growing radicalization.

According to Saudi officials, despite these alerts, German authorities failed to take appropriate action, leading to the tragic incident.

Al-Abdulmohsen, a Saudi-born former Muslim, arrived in Germany in 2005, initially seeking asylum.

His asylum was granted in 2016, just a year after Chancellor Angela Merkel’s open-door policy allowed more than a million refugees, many from the Middle East, to enter Germany. However, al-Abdulmohsen’s background raised red flags for the Saudi government.

Born in Hofuf in 1974, al-Abdulmohsen was known to have renounced Islam, branding himself a heretic in the eyes of many in his home country.

He also used his social media platform to advocate for Saudi women seeking to flee the country, founding a website that allegedly facilitated human trafficking.

While active on social media under the pseudonym @SaudiExMuslims, al-Abdulmohsen’s role as a trafficker, according to Saudi intelligence, raised suspicions of his dangerous intentions.

Saudi officials claim that he was involved in people smuggling, with the Ministry of Interior (Mabaatheth) maintaining an extensive file on him.

Despite these warnings, German authorities took no decisive action, allowing al-Abdulmohsen to live relatively unnoticed in Germany until the recent attack.

The attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market has cast a harsh spotlight on Germany’s handling of security threats.

Despite defending the layout of the market and claiming an ongoing investigation into the suspect’s past, German authorities are facing growing criticism for their oversight.

Part of the criticism centers on the failure to secure access routes to the market, which allowed the suspect to drive into the crowd unhindered.

Adding to the complexity of the case is the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the West. While the Saudi government is an important ally to many Western nations, its human rights record has been widely criticized.

Despite the country’s modernization efforts under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, such as allowing women to drive and fostering a more open public life, dissent remains severely restricted.
