St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew visited the Prison Farm on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. There he was accompanied by the Acting Commissioner of Prisons and representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and witnessed first-hand the excellent work being done to develop an ideal farm.
Considering his official visit to the Prison farm, Prime Minister Drew expressed his gratitude towards all who were involved in this initiative. He appreciated them all for their dedication in keeping the farm productive and purposeful.
PM Drew stated that this farm is intended to cut down on the food bill of the prison. As per what he witnessed, he observed that a number of things are being grown here that are actually used in the prison on a daily basis.
Apart from helping with the prison bill they also helped with the nutritional upkeep of the prisoners. PM Drew also emphasized the rehabilitative value of the farm that offered inmates meaningful work and skills for the development. Along with this, the St. Kitts and Nevis federation is also supporting the goal of cost reduction and self-sufficiency.
Moreover, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is committed to further expand the prison farming to increase the food production, cut its costs and support the health and wellbeing of its inmates.
Following his visit to the prison farm PM Drew shared glimpses of the one-day tour and eulogized the great working skills of the Agricultural Ministry in developing a model farm.
The Prison Farm is a part of the Prison Rehabilitation Programme, an initiative by St. Kitts and Nevis. The project aims to rehabilitate the inmates and help them to reintegrate into society. The farm provides enough space for inmates to learn agricultural skills and participate in meaningful work. It has also been contributing to the food supply of the prison.
The St. Kitts and Nevis Government is actively expanding the prison farming program to increase the food production, reduce costs and support the health and well-being of the inmates.
Sharing the photographs from his visit to the Prison Farm, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew noted that the farm project supports multiple functions, such as:
- To provide fresh, healthy food for the prison
- To cut down on the food budget
- Support the overall rehabilitation program
