Antony’s time at Manchester United may be drawing to a close, with the Brazilian winger being linked with a high-profile move to Saudi Arabia.
Reports suggest that Al Nassr, home to former United star Cristiano Ronaldo, is showing strong interest in securing the 24-year-old’s services during the ongoing summer transfer window.
Antony, who joined United from Ajax in 2022 for a staggering €100 million (£87.4 million), has struggled to maintain consistent form in the Premier League. After a challenging start to the 2023/24 season, he was loaned out to Real Betis in January, where he rediscovered his form.
Over 26 appearances in Spain, Antony scored nine goals and provided five assists, helping Betis reach the final of the UEFA Conference League, where they ultimately lost to Chelsea.
Following his return to Old Trafford, the Manchester Evening News reported earlier this month that Antony had communicated his desire to leave United.
His intentions have triggered speculation, with French outlet Foot Mercato claiming that Al Nassr are preparing a bid to bring the Brazilian to the Saudi Pro League.
If a deal materialises, Antony would join a growing list of European stars lured by Saudi Arabia’s lucrative football project and reunite with Ronaldo, whom he has long admired. Antony has often spoken of the influence the Portuguese icon has had on his career.
“Words can’t describe Cristiano, the best in the world,” Antony said in 2022. “In just a few days, I learnt a lot from him. He has an extraordinary mind, and I always take a lot from our conversations.”
He has also credited Ronaldo with helping him settle at Old Trafford, describing him as a “huge reference” for young players.
In a later interview, Antony revealed he had grown up idolising not just Ronaldo but also Lionel Messi, Neymar, and David Beckham — all of whom inspired his attacking style.
Despite his potential, Antony’s future at United hinges heavily on the financials. The club would reportedly need to receive at least £32.58 million to avoid a capital loss under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
With United currently undergoing a summer reshuffle under manager Erik ten Hag and INEOS sporting leadership, the winger’s departure could free up funds for reinforcements.
Antony’s next move remains uncertain, but with Al Nassr’s interest growing and his admiration for Ronaldo well-documented, the Saudi Pro League could soon welcome another marquee signing.
