The study of Save the Children found that nearly one million children are currently engaged in child labour in Afghanistan as family incomes have plunged in the last six months.

A survey conducted in the 1,400 households across seven regions of Afghanistan found that 82 percent of families are lost their income since the destruction of the former Western-backed government and transition of power to the Taliban in 2021 August.

The research was held by the Britain NGO on February 14 Monday in which they found 18 percent of families are forced to send their children to work due to their financial crises.

As per the reports and analysis of Save the Children, just one child in every family was forced to go to work, then more than one million children in the nation are engaged in child labour.

It was repeated non-stop by the humanitarian NGOs and the United Nations. Afghanistan is in the hold of a humanitarian tragedy because of the frozen global help and shortage of access to assets held abroad after the Taliban took over the government.

Jobs in Afghanistan are limited and literally dried up. Many workers who mainly work for the government organisations have not been paid for months in the country, which is why they are dependent on foreign donations under the previous government.

More than 80 percent of those studied by Save the Children reported a loss of income, with little more than a third having lost all of their household income.

Almost one-third population said that they had received less than 50 percent of what they had earned before the Taliban came to power.

According to the study, the massive spike in prices caused by the economic crisis has left many families incapable of affording food. About 36 percent of families reported purchasing food in the market on credit.

The research said almost eight percent said they were begging or relying on charity to feed their families.

According to ‘Chris Nyamandi’, Save the Children’s director in Afghanistan, he never saw anything like the current hopeless situation in the country.

He further stated that we treat frighteningly ill children every day who have not eaten anything except bread for months.
