Samsung C&T Engineering and Construction (E&C) Group has successfully secured a $2.84 billion Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for a large-scale desalination and combined cycle power plant in Qatar.
The project, set to be completed by 2029, will significantly contribute to Qatar’s infrastructure, meeting 16% of the country’s electricity demand and 17% of its desalinated water needs.
The Qatar Facility E Desalination and Combined Cycle Power Project is a joint venture between Samsung C&T and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, commissioned by Kahramaa, Qatar’s General Electricity and Water Corporation.
Samsung C&T will take the lead in the EPC execution, managing all aspects of the project, valued at approximately 3.97 trillion Korean Won (KRW), reflecting a strong commitment to the region’s energy and water sectors.
Located in the Ras Abu Fontas area, approximately 18 kilometers southeast of Doha, the project will feature a combined cycle power plant with the capacity to generate up to 2,400 MW of electricity.
Additionally, the facility will incorporate a desalination plant capable of producing 500,000 tons of fresh water daily, ensuring a reliable water supply for the rapidly growing nation. Upon completion in 2029, the plant is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing Qatar’s rising energy and water demands.
Samsung C&T’s involvement in the project comes after its success in executing similar large-scale power and desalination plants in the region.
Notably, the company has previously completed projects such as the Umm Al Houl Fresh Water Power Generation facility and the QEIC solar power project, further solidifying its position in Qatar’s infrastructure development.
Vice President of the Energy Solutions Business at Samsung C&T, Lee Byung-soo, highlighted the importance of the company’s longstanding partnership with Kahramaa in securing the contract.
“As this is a national infrastructure project in Qatar, our existing experience and the trust we have built played a big role in winning the project. We will do our best to successfully complete the project and provide stable power and fresh water supply,” Lee said.
This new venture not only strengthens Samsung C&T’s position in Qatar but also reinforces its reputation as a global leader in the power generation industry.
The company is actively executing several notable projects worldwide, including the Fujairah F3 combined cycle power plant in the UAE and the Tanajib power plant in Saudi Arabia.
Samsung C&T’s continued success in Qatar is expected to lead to additional contracts, particularly as the Qatari government seeks to expand its energy infrastructure to meet the growing demand driven by population increases and industrial expansion.
The completion of this project will further elevate Samsung C&T’s standing in the global power and desalination sectors.
