According to the Iraq health ministries in the central government and Kurdish region, Iraq found their first case of omicron variant of the coronavirus yesterday on 6 January.
Further, the Iraqi Ministry of Health said five patients were found in the northern state of Duhok in Iraqi Kurdistan. The ministry said that the number of foreign diplomats in the capital of Baghdad also tested positive, and the persons were unknown.
According to Saman Barzinji, the Kurdistan Regional Government Health minister, the Dohuk infections recorded in the family belong to one’s home, and they were not vaccinated, and there one family member comes from abroad who infected them.
On 6 January, Iraq recorded 665 new cases of COVID-19, and the total number of cases in Iraq has been about 2 million since the start of the pandemic. Three deaths were also recorded. The total digit of deaths from COVID-19 in Iraq is 24,194.
The variant of COVID-19 and Omicron was first detected in South Africa, and Middle announced their border closure and travel restrictions in late 2021.
According to the WHO (World Health Organisation) data, until now, 128 total countries reported the cases regarding Omicron before the holiday period.
Barzinji requested residents of Iraq to get their COVID-19 booster shot and get vaccinated.
According to some sources, Iraq issued at least 14.4 million COVID-19 booster shots, which is enough for 18% of the country population to get vaccinated.
