In a bold stride toward renewable energy self-sufficiency, Egypt has unveiled a $200 million solar components manufacturing complex in the Ain Sokhna industrial zone, marking a key milestone in its national vision to localize clean energy technology and transform into a regional green energy hub.
The project, spearheaded by Chinese solar technology giant Sunrev Solar under the TEDA–Egypt industrial development framework, was officially launched at a high-level ceremony attended by Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Industry and Transport, Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir.
Developed on a sprawling 200,000 square meters within the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), the integrated solar manufacturing facility will be executed in two phases.
The first phase, with a projected investment of $90 million, will see the construction of two factories capable of producing 2 gigawatts (GW) of solar cells and an additional 2 GW of solar modules annually.
The second phase, budgeted at $110 million, will focus on the localization of raw materials, such as silicon ingots and wafers, while also increasing the overall production capacity.
The ceremony was also attended by Wei Jianqing, General Manager of China-Africa TEDA Investment Co. (CA–TEDA); Cao Hui, Managing Director of TEDA; He Fei, Managing Director of Sunrev Solar; and key representatives from SCZONE and other government bodies.
“This project represents a significant step forward in localising advanced industries in Egypt and enhancing industrial integration in clean energy,” said Waleid Gamal El-Dien, Chairman of SCZONE.
“We are proud to host one of the largest industrial investments in the renewable energy components sector. It is expected to generate over 1,800 direct jobs and thousands more indirectly.”
He emphasized SCZONE’s commitment to ensuring the timely execution of the project and highlighted its alignment with Egypt’s strategic goals to become a major exporter of green energy technologies across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
Sunrev Solar’s Managing Director He Fei praised Egypt’s commitment to sustainability and industrial development. “We are bringing to Egypt our most advanced technologies in solar energy. Egypt was chosen due to its clear national vision towards a sustainable energy future,” he said.
The project is seen as a key element in Egypt’s push to increase its share of renewable energy in the national grid while positioning the country as a competitive base for the manufacturing and export of solar technologies.
Currently, Egypt aims to generate 42% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035, with solar energy expected to play a leading role.
Industry experts believe the solar complex could significantly reduce Egypt’s reliance on imported renewable components, lower production costs, and stimulate a high-tech manufacturing ecosystem within the country.
With its strategic location, growing infrastructure, and supportive investment environment, Ain Sokhna’s new solar manufacturing complex may well shine as a beacon of Egypt’s clean energy ambitions.
