Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has announced a significant milestone in its efforts to support the emirate’s transition to sustainable mobility, with more than 740 EV Green Charger points now operational across Dubai.
The initiative, which began in 2014, aligns with Dubai’s ambitious goals to reduce carbon emissions and promote green mobility as part of the UAE’s vision for a sustainable future.
The EV Green Charger network includes ultra-fast, fast, public, and wall-box chargers, catering to the diverse needs of electric vehicle (EV) users.
Since its inception, the initiative has benefited a total of 16,828 customers, providing approximately 31,674 megawatt-hours of electricity to EVs up to the end of September 2024.
The network’s development has been instrumental in supporting the growing number of electric vehicles in Dubai, which surpassed 34,970 as of October 2024.
Digital Accessibility for EV Users
To enhance user convenience, Dewa has made it easy to locate charging stations through its website, smart application, and 14 other digital platforms. This accessibility has been a cornerstone of Dewa’s approach to fostering widespread EV adoption.
“The EV Green Charger initiative, launched by Dewa in 2014, aims to provide a pioneering infrastructure for EV charging stations, supporting the steady increase in electric vehicles across Dubai,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of Dewa.
He also emphasized the UAE’s ambitious goal of having 50 percent of the vehicles on its roads be electric by 2050, a key element of the nation’s strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.
New Framework to Boost Private Sector Participation
Dewa recently launched a comprehensive Regulatory and Licensing Framework for the development and operation of EV charging infrastructure in Dubai.
According to Al Tayer, this move is a “significant step towards promoting green mobility and achieving Dubai’s target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”
The framework is designed to encourage private sector participation in building and managing EV charging stations, fostering investment in green mobility infrastructure.
In line with this initiative, Dewa has granted the first two Independent Charge Point Operator (CPO) licenses to Tesla and UAEV. These partnerships aim to accelerate the adoption of EVs by expanding the charging network and reducing emissions in the mobility sector.
Driving Towards Sustainability
Dewa’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its continuous efforts to enhance the EV Green Charger network and create a supportive ecosystem for electric vehicle users.
By fostering collaboration with private operators, the initiative not only reduces the environmental impact of transportation but also promotes investment in innovative solutions for sustainable mobility.
As the UAE moves closer to achieving its net-zero carbon emission goals by 2050, Dubai’s efforts to integrate electric vehicles into its transportation network serve as a blueprint for other cities worldwide.
The expansion of EV infrastructure, coupled with supportive policies and public-private partnerships, positions the emirate as a global leader in green mobility.
With a growing network of charging points and a robust framework to support further expansion, Dubai is steadily driving towards a greener, more sustainable future.
