The Melbourne Victory club in the Australian Football League announced today, Tuesday, the signing of former Manchester United striker Nani, who competes in the English Premier League, on a two-year contract.
The Portuguese winger signed an 18-month contract with Serie A club Venezia last January but left the team by mutual consent last week after playing 10 matches with the club that was relegated to the second division.
The 35-year-old spent eight years in England with United, winning four Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.
His football career also included periods with Sporting Lisbon, Fenerbahce, Valencia, Lazio and Orlando City, a competitor in the NBA.
Nani scored 24 goals in 112 matches for Portugal and played in the 2014 World Cup, as well as three European championships, including the 2016 version, where Portugal defeated France in the final.
“We are proud to be able to bring a player like Nani to our club and believe he will be a great asset to the Melbourne Victory and the entire A-League,” said coach Tony Popovich. He has had an incredibly successful career at club and international level, and we believe his level and experience will be key to achieving our ambitions this season.”
The Melbourne Victory will face four-time champions Manchester United in a friendly match at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday.
