Meirav Cohen, an Israeli Politician, expressed her thoughts about violence and inequality against women during the ceremony of awarding the social equality minister on 24th November.   

The awarding ceremony was focused on recognizing some exceptional and remarkable contributions towards fighting violence against women in Israel. Cohen shared her opinion towards the current issues related to the place of women in the public space in the nation at the ceremony. She stated that a woman’s condition could be understood through her presence and position in society. 

According to Cohen, status of a woman at work, in the Knesset, in science, or in the world of business and leisure culture and activities reflects a clear picture of how good they are doing in their private space.  

The behaviour and the sense of self-safety among the women tell the worth and how safe they feel in their own homes with their family and knowns. Furthermore, Cohen stated that as per the current year reports and statistics, nearly 21 women and girls had been murdered and exploited with violence in the context of their relationship with parents, spouses and brothers in their own families. These cases have been registered from the place which is supposed to be the safest for them. She added. 

How can you acknowledge that your sister, mother or friend is going through a violent relationship?

She stated know when to interfere in the situation by spotting these signs.

• Not Like Before: She has started behaving strangely suddenly and looks off sometimes.
• Rapid Progress: The progress of her relationship is fast than ever. She finds herself in an exciting, overwhelming, intense relationship right from the beginning. He pushes the relationship to progress quickly.
• Excuses: She defends him and justifies everything he does.
• Stands between us: He interferes in her every task, every meeting with her other friends.
• Distance: She is more tilted towards him, getting away from her family and friends.
• Detective: She always seems stressed and fearful of him.

These signs might be the start of a violent relationship, and by noticing and intervening in the situation, you can prevent another victim from getting into violence.

The inequality and exploitation of women’s rights and safety start from their homes in many cases, as per reports. 

Moreover, Cohen further addresses the issue that if women can’t wear what they like, can’t work where they want, can’t hang out like men and top of that when they don’t have anyone to go to in the end, 

This could result in men thinking and allowing themselves to treat women disrespectfully and violently.

The social equality minister sees the whole issue as connected. According to her, if women are not getting their deserved place in society in recent times as well, then maybe it’s not surprising that the efforts to eradicate violence against women are failing miserably. 

The concept of separation of men from women represents inequality itself. The mindset of separation holds a psychological influence on people. The stereotypes have been manipulating the behaviours between men and women. 

She stated that examples of separation between men and women could be seen everywhere. Public transport offers different seats in different sections. The political parties are parted between the two, where men and women are divided.
