Cairo: According to sources, a Muslim worshipper who was thought to have died while in a sojoud (prostration) position at the Prophet Mohammed’s Mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia, was actually unconscious.
His picture is getting viral on social media in which it is clearly visible that a man was lying on the ground and covered with a prayer rug at the mosque as worshippers look on.
Some online reports claimed that the man was a Pakistani national who passed away while offering the Friday prayers.
However, Khalid Al Sahli, a spokesman for the Red Crescent Authority in Medina, said the ambulatory team stationed at the Prophet Mohammed’s Mosque had handled a case of a worshipper who fainted during the prayers and transferred him to a local hospital. The man’s identity was not revealed.
Recently, the authorities of Saudi Arabia have recently lifted most of the restrictions against COVID-19 at the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet Mohammed’s Mosque, including the cancellation of physical distancing. The Kingdom has witnessed a marked decline in virus infection rates in recent weeks.
There was one more attack in the mosque, where worshippers at dawn prayer in a suburb of Toronto tackled and subdued a 24 years old man who allegedly entered their mosque and attacked people with bear spray on Saturday.
Peel Regional Police said the man entered the Dar Al-Tawheed Islamic Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, shortly before 7 a.m. and allegedly “discharged bear spray towards people in the mosque while brandishing a hatchet.”
Nadia Hasan of the National Council of Canadian Muslims, speaking on behalf of the mosque, said the man sprayed a group of about 20 men while they were praying.
“Some of the men turned around and settled very valiantly that they would not let him attack them,” she explained. “They tackled him to the ground and held him until the cops arrived.”
Mohammad Moiz Oma, from the Mississauga suburbs, has been arrested. Police have stated that they are investigating “all possible motives” for the incident, pending charges.
The attack on congregants at the Dar Al-Tawheed Islamic Centre is incredibly disturbing. I strongly condemn this violence – which has no place in Canada – and I’m keeping the community in my thoughts today. I also want to applaud the courage of those who were there this morning.
