Floods and storms killed nearly 18 people after destroying several regions of Afghanistan over the past five days, as per officials’ statement on Wednesday.
Scores of Afghans die each and every year in torrential showers, mainly in poor rural areas where poorly built homes are at risk of collapse.
According to the deputy minister for disaster management, ‘Sharafuddin Muslim‘, the latest floods wracked the provenances of Faryab and Parwan and various other regions.
Through a video statement, Muslims stated, “nearly 18 to 20 people have been killed in all ten areas, and more than 100 houses were destroyed due to floods.
Two people are still missing, while 30 others have been injured.
He further stated that the government of Afghanistan provides relief teams to the most affected areas with tents and food. The administration is allocating cash to families of those killed.
Since the Taliban stormed back to power in August 2021, foreign-funded aid and disaster relief schemes have dramatically fallen off.
Western nations are wary that any help could be hijacked by Kabul’s new rulers, consolidating their grip on government.
Rescue efforts have fallen to the Taliban themselves, who have been waging an insurgency for the past twenty years and have little experience in emergency management.
This year flooding also came as the country observed the Eid al-Fitr holidays after fasting for a month of Ramadan, which ended on Saturday in Afghanistan.
During the last two weeks of Ramadan, Afghanistan saw several deadly attacks primarily targeting the minority Shia and Sufi communities.
ISIS claimed many of these attacks.
