Russia; The Russian military said Friday it had targeted a meeting of the Ukrainian air force in Vinnytsia, a city in central Ukraine far from the front lines, on Thursday in a deadly bombing that was condemned by the international community.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that Kalibr missiles fired from the sea hit the “officers’ house” in this city, where a meeting of “the command of the Ukrainian Air Force with representatives of foreign arms suppliers was taking place.”
“As a result of this blow, the participants in the meeting were eliminated,” she added.
Russia does not acknowledge any serious mistakes or crimes committed by its armed forces in Ukraine and asserts that it strikes only military targets. Ukraine is accused of fabricating bombings or executions of civilians by the Russians.
According to the Ukrainian military, the missiles hit a parking garage and a commercial building in the city centre that houses offices and small shops.
At least 23 people were killed. The Secretary-General of the United Nations condemned the “horrific” attack, and the European Union condemned new Russian “atrocities”.
