China: Beijing on Wednesday condemned the reception in Prague of a Taiwanese delegation, warning the Czech Republic that this step violates the “one China” principle adopted by the European Union to approach this file.
The Chinese position came after an official Taiwanese delegation led by Parliament Speaker Yu Si-Kun spent four days in the Czech Republic, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.
On Wednesday, the Chinese embassy in Prague issued a statement calling Yu a “militant separatist,” accusing the Czech Republic of “violating China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
China is doing its best to isolate and delegitimize Taipei in the international arena.
Like other European Union countries, the Czech Republic officially adopts a “one China” policy, but Prague maintains close ties with the island.
In its statement, the Chinese Embassy in Prague said, “China calls on the Czech Republic to respect China’s positions and fulfil its commitments on the one-China policy.”
“China will take all necessary measures to curb Taiwan’s independent tendencies,” she added.
For Beijing, Taiwan, the island where nationalist forces took refuge in 1949 after their defeat at the hands of the Communists, is an inalienable part of China and must eventually be reunified with the mainland by force if necessary.
