Today, the Egyptian authorities carried out the death sentence for the killers of the Maadi girl after she was stolen, dragged and killed under the wheels of a car, which aroused public opinion in Egypt and the Arab world in 2020.
During the “Al-Hekaya” programme, by the famous Egyptian journalist Amr Adib, broadcast on MBC Egypt today, Friday, a video clip of the confessions of those accused of killing Maryam, known in the media as “The Maadi Girl”, after the prosecution decided to imprison them for 4 days pending trial.
The accused: Walid Abdel Rahman said: “We sat around for a while to find someone to take the bag from. We met one in Maadi. We took the bag from her, and the microbus ran, and we took each other and went to the highway and threw the bag before Dar al-Salam. Her make-up, and we threw it empty.”
As for the second defendant, Muhammad Osama, he said: “We went down in the morning and worked on Arabic from 7 in the morning until three and a half, and we told us to go get a bag, and before we went to Maadi, we landed on the tiger fat, and we went there, walking in the street, and there was a girl with a veiled cattle, and we preferred to walk behind her.” I pulled the bag, and the girl ran with me and fell to the ground, and I took the bag, and Walid ran in Arabic.”
The competent authorities had decided to implement the death sentence issued against the defendants by the court, specifically after the rejection of their appeal before the Court of Cassation, only to find the defendants facing the execution of the death sentence after being convicted of dragging and killing the “Maadi girl” in the street.
The incident sparked public opinion after some thieves tried to steal one of the girls while she was walking in the street, which caused her to be dragged and killed instantly as she fell under the wheels of the car in which the accused were travelling.
In December of 2020, the Cairo Criminal Court issued a death sentence for the accused, “Walid. A, and Muhammad. A» by hanging, given the premeditated murder and possession of firearms and knives, in addition to coerced theft.
The court said in the rationale for its ruling that the incident, as it settled in its certainty and comforted her, is extracted from all its papers and the investigations that took place in it and what was discussed in the court session; it is that the defendants agreed on their unbridled desire to obtain the forbidden money wherever it was found instead of searching through an honourable way that they could From reaching their destination, they took the path of evil, and the axes of their thoughts began to grope for forbidden money, even by treachery, stealing innocent people, and taking their lives to achieve their goal.
The prosecution had charged two of the defendants with the accusations of deliberately killing the victim, Maryam, in the Maadi neighbourhood on October 13, 2020, as one of them rushed towards her driving a car on the public road, and when he approached her, the other grabbed a bag from her back. The car they were riding in, intending to take her life so that they could escape with the bag, inflicted injuries on her that cost her life.
The prosecution said that this felony was combined with another felony, that at the same time and place mentioned above, they stole a sum of cash and movables from the victim, on the public road, in the event that they were two carriers.
