A mother was hospitalized twice due to malnutrition after she only had one meal a day to be able to feed her two sons due to the high cost of living crisis.
Kelly Thompson, 43, lives on £40 a week to feed herself and her two sons and says rising inflation has crippled her already struggling family.
Although Thompson’s state aid covers her monthly rent and some other costs, she has only £160 left for all remaining expenses, she says.
The mother, who lives in Slough, Berkshire County, stated that it is almost impossible to meet her needs and the needs of her children in light of the high food prices, according to sources.
The woman has lost more than 12 kilograms of weight because she eats only once a day, her clothes look very loose when she wears them, and she has to sell the gift her daughter received for her birthday in exchange for money to buy food.
This situation led to her being hospitalized twice because she was malnourished, and she even needed blood transfusions to make up for her extremely low iron levels because she could not afford fresh food.
The mother is experiencing this experience in conjunction with the disclosure of new data released Wednesday by the National Office of Statistics that the inflation rate in the United Kingdom has reached its highest level since 1982, at 10.1 percent.
Ms Thompson, who has a 14-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter, continued, “I hate getting up every day and saying to myself, ‘Oh my God, I don’t want to face another day. The cost of living is crazy right now, and I don’t know what to do. We don’t own anything. Honestly, I feel I will have to resort to begging. The situation is now worse than ever. I can’t bear to see the new inflation rate. Every time I visit the store, I find that the price of everything has gone up, and I do not dare to look at the gas meter. I’m thinking of stealing, but I can’t stand what would happen to my son if he caught me. I cry every day because the situation is getting worse, and I feel so trapped, as if I am suffocating and I can do nothing. I feel like everything is getting out of control. We need someone to step in to help the people who need it.”
Ms Thompson struggled to get by since she was infected with the Coronavirus, which turned out to be long-term, and its symptoms continued to haunt her since December 2020, until she lost her job as a cleaning lady.
