Jeremiah Norbert joins PM cabinet as Minister of Crime Prevention

Saint Lucia: Philip J Pierre, the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, included Jeremiah Norbert, MP from Micoud North, in his cabinet as a Minister of Crime Prevention and the Minister of Persons With Disabilities on Monday, 4 March. Before joining the cabinet, Jeremiah Norbert resigned from his position as Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly on 27 February.

Jeremiah Norbert in his new position will work under the guidance of PM Pierre who also handles the ministry of national security. Minister Norbert will be responsible for the management of the crime situation in the nation and the maintenance of the law.

The position of the Minister of Crime Prevention given to Jeremiah Norbert is seen as a part of the commitment made by PM Philip J Pierre to reduce crime in the nation. Norbert said in his statement that he will give his best in the new role and also asked that not to take him lightly.

PM Pierre in his recent statements mentioned about the approach of the government and authorities under his guidance to neutralise the crime in Saint Lucia. A special focus is given on the gun based crimes observed in the nation.

Recently PM Pierre who was at the summit of the CARICOM with the delegation came early from the event to give attention to the necessary national issues. At that time also PM had a meeting with the key members of the law authorities and discussed about the ground level situation of the country.

Ernest Hilaire, the deputy prime minister of Saint Lucia, also shared the same kind of views in his recent statement where he also said that they will never surrender in front of the crimes. The entire statements and events were also covered by the Tribunal Community.

Minister Jeremiah Norbert is expected to be the ideal candidate for this position to handle crime and maintain the law in the nation because of his previous experience as a police officer.

It is said that due to his prior service as a policeman, he understands the ground situations of the crime and with relevant authority in the field he can tackle the situation better.

PM Philip J Pierre mentioned in his statement on the involvement of Jeremiah Norbert in the cabinet to look over the new responsibilities that “the government is committed to reduce the crime and gun violence in Saint Lucia and Norbert is expected to improve the focus of the authorities towards the public safety.

Minister Jeremiah Norbert also shared his gratitude towards PM Philip J Pierre to honour him with the responsibility of the minister for persons with disabilities. It needs to be noted that Norbert was involved in a bike accident in which he lost his right leg during the general elections on 26 July 2024.

Jeremiah Norbert played a very crucial role in the growth of the Saint Lucia Labour Party with his dedication and service along the time with his commitment towards the party and his responsibilities.

The most crucial achievement seen in his political career was his landslide victory over the seat from Micoud North in the last general elections for the Saint Lucia Labour Party. Before that Micoud North was seen as strong hold of the opposition party for a long period of time.
