JEDDAH, July 23, 2024 — Saudi Arabia has made significant strides in mango production, now meeting nearly 70 percent of its domestic demand for the fruit.

The country’s production in 2023 surpassed 89,500 metric tonnes, as reported by the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture and highlighted by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The Jazan region stands out as the epicenter of mango cultivation in Saudi Arabia, contributing over 60,000 metric tonnes annually.

This region’s favorable climate and soil conditions have made it the leading mango producer, underscoring the country’s successful efforts to boost local agriculture.

Saudi Arabia’s mango production encompasses more than 20 different varieties, offering a diverse range of options for consumers. The harvest season, which spans from April to August, has become a key period for local farmers and the national economy alike.

Experts highlight the numerous health benefits associated with mangoes. Known for their high vitamin and mineral content, mangoes are a rich source of vitamins A and C, potassium, and dietary fiber.

They are recognized for their potential to aid digestion, enhance heart health, and boost the immune system. Additionally, mangoes have been linked to reduced risks of certain cancers, alleviation of anemia, and improvements in skin and eye health.

In response to the growing production, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture has launched the “Harvest Season” campaign.

This initiative aims to increase public awareness about the availability of seasonal fruits, support local farmers, and promote the consumption of locally grown produce.

By highlighting the benefits of consuming homegrown mangoes, the campaign seeks to strengthen the connection between consumers and local agricultural efforts.

The campaign also underscores the government’s commitment to agricultural self-sufficiency and food security. By investing in and expanding local fruit production, Saudi Arabia is working towards reducing its reliance on imported goods and fostering a more sustainable agricultural sector.

The success in mango production is part of a broader strategy to enhance the country’s agricultural capabilities. The Saudi government has been actively supporting various initiatives to improve crop yields and promote sustainable farming practices.

This aligns with the Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on oil revenues by bolstering other sectors, including agriculture.
