St. Kitts and Nevis: The Federation has decided to conduct a National Consultation on the Citizen Security which is being planned by the Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew. This led the Administration to address crime and violence in the communities of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The National Consultation forms part of a 90-Day comprehensive campaign which was dubbed as ‘90 Days of Intensity, a Whole Society Responsibility’.
Reportedly, the Campaign aims to address the crime and violence from a public health perspective through a collaborative, community-driven approach that involves various stakeholders, promotes prevention and fosters resilience.
One of the major key activities of the 90-Day Campaign is the National Consultation on Citizen Security. Its main objective is to engage the national stakeholders in developing the comprehensive strategies and solutions for citizen security.
However, the National Consultation will involve various subject matters by experts, policymakers and community leaders. Some of the topics that are needed to be discussed will include youth violence, domestic violence, community policing and the criminal justice system. One of the products of the National Consultation will be a National Plan for Citizen Security.
According to the Prime Minister and Minister of National Security – Dr. Terrance Drew of St. Kitts and Nevis, the government has already initiated few of preliminary discussions with the stakeholders in its efforts to ensure the National Consultation which is inclusive and data driven.
PM Drew said that the security of the citizens is responsibility of all but the government must take the lead in addressing the threats to the national security and ensuring safe communities.
He added further to his statement that the National Consultation is integral to the Government’s ambitious agenda for creating a Sustainable Island State. One of the key pillars of the agenda is social protection.
As the National Consultation and by extension, the 90-Day Campaign will help them all to achieve their goal, said Dr. Drew.
The National Consultation on Citizen Security will be held on August 22, 2024, as other planned activities for the 90-Day Campaign include town hall meetings, community outreach programmes, career fairs and educational workshops.
