A devastating collision between two passenger trains in Egypt’s Nile delta claimed the lives of at least three people, including two children, and left 40 others injured, according to Egyptian authorities.
The tragic accident occurred on Saturday in the city of Zagazig, the capital of the Sharqiya province, an area located roughly 80 km northeast of Cairo.
Egypt’s national railway authority confirmed the incident, while the Ministry of Health has been coordinating rescue and medical efforts at the crash site.
Witnesses and emergency personnel described scenes of chaos and destruction following the collision.
Video footage circulated on social media and local news channels showed a mangled train car, severely damaged by the impact, while groups of bystanders rushed to assist the injured.
Many survivors were pulled through the shattered windows of the train carriages as rescue workers and volunteers tried to provide first aid on the ground.
Increasing Frequency of Railway Accidents
Saturday’s train collision is the latest in a string of deadly accidents that have highlighted ongoing issues with Egypt’s railway system, one of the oldest in the world.
Derailments and crashes have become frequent occurrences in the country, largely attributed to outdated infrastructure, equipment malfunctions, and chronic underfunding.
The Egyptian government, under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, has been trying to address these safety concerns through a series of modernisation efforts.
In 2018, President el-Sisi announced a $8.13 billion (250 billion Egyptian pounds) initiative to overhaul the nation’s rail network. However, despite these efforts, accidents continue to occur with alarming regularity.
Just last month, a train in the Mediterranean province of Alexandria collided with a truck that was attempting to cross the railway tracks, resulting in two fatalities.
Similarly, several other accidents in the past few years have claimed dozens of lives, raising serious questions about the progress of these reform efforts.
Emergency Response
The Egyptian Ministry of Health has dispatched several ambulances to the crash site, while local hospitals in Zagazig were placed on high alert to handle the influx of casualties.
Health officials have reported that many of the injured sustained serious trauma, with some in critical condition. Emergency responders worked tirelessly to clear the wreckage and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.
Egyptian media outlets have reported that a full investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collision.
Although initial reports do not indicate foul play, mechanical failures, track conditions, and human error will likely be examined as part of the probe.
Long-Standing Rail Safety Concerns
Egypt’s railway system, one of the busiest in Africa and the Middle East, transports millions of passengers annually. However, it has long struggled with safety issues.
Decades of neglect, a lack of investment, and insufficient maintenance have made it one of the deadliest railway networks in the world.
Despite President el-Sisi’s pledge to overhaul the system, much of the infrastructure remains outdated. Train carriages, tracks, and signaling systems often show signs of deterioration, making them susceptible to accidents.
Citizens and lawmakers have called for faster implementation of safety measures and greater accountability for those responsible for ensuring the system’s proper function.
As rescue operations in Zagazig continue, the nation mourns yet another tragedy on its railway lines, while many call for renewed urgency in reforming the embattled rail system.
