A devastating collision between two passenger trains in Egypt’s Nile delta claimed the lives of at least three people, including two children, and left 40 others injured, according to Egyptian authorities.

The tragic accident occurred on Saturday in the city of Zagazig, the capital of the Sharqiya province, an area located roughly 80 km northeast of Cairo.

Egypt’s national railway authority confirmed the incident, while the Ministry of Health has been coordinating rescue and medical efforts at the crash site.

Witnesses and emergency personnel described scenes of chaos and destruction following the collision.

Video footage circulated on social media and local news channels showed a mangled train car, severely damaged by the impact, while groups of bystanders rushed to assist the injured.

Increasing Frequency of Railway Accidents

Saturday’s train collision is the latest in a string of deadly accidents that have highlighted ongoing issues with Egypt’s railway system, one of the oldest in the world.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health has dispatched several ambulances to the crash site, while local hospitals in Zagazig were placed on high alert to handle the influx of casualties.

Health officials have reported that many of the injured sustained serious trauma, with some in critical condition. Emergency responders worked tirelessly to clear the wreckage and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.

Egyptian media outlets have reported that a full investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collision.
