Former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba took a significant step toward resuming his career on Tuesday, March 11, as he officially completed his 18-month ban from professional football.
The French international, once regarded as one of the most talented midfielders of his generation, is now free to return to competitive action, with potential moves to Major League Soccer (MLS) or the Saudi Pro League reportedly on the table.
Pogba’s Suspension and Ban Reduction
Pogba’s troubles began after a routine doping test conducted following Juventus’ Serie A match against Udinese on August 20, 2023, revealed traces of a non-endogenous substance in his system. This resulted in an immediate provisional suspension on September 11, 2023.
The Italian Anti-Doping National Tribunal initially imposed a four-year ban on February 29, 2024, a punishment that could have effectively ended the 30-year-old’s career at the highest level.
However, in a dramatic turn of events, Pogba successfully appealed the decision, and his suspension was reduced to 18 months on October 4, 2024.
This revision allowed him to resume training in January 2025, paving the way for his return to professional football upon the completion of his ban in March.
In the wake of these developments, Juventus and Pogba mutually agreed to terminate his contract in November 2024.
Possible Destinations: MLS or Saudi Arabia?
With his suspension now behind him, speculation is mounting over Pogba’s next move. According to reports from Italian outlets Gazzetta dello Sport and La Repubblica (via Football Italia), Pogba is considering a move to either Major League Soccer or the Saudi Pro League.
Having spent recent months in Miami with his family, Pogba could be drawn to Inter Miami, the MLS club co-owned by David Beckham, which has already attracted global stars such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Sergio Busquets.
The presence of such high-profile figures in the American league could appeal to Pogba as he seeks a fresh start in a less pressurized environment. Alternatively, the lucrative Saudi Pro League remains a strong possibility.
The league has made significant investments in high-profile European talent, with Pogba’s compatriots N’Golo Kanté and Karim Benzema currently playing for Al-Ittihad.
Furthermore, former Juventus sporting director Pavel Nedvěd has recently taken up a role at Saudi club Al-Shabab, which could open the door for a potential reunion.
Pogba’s Last Full Match and Career Uncertainty
Remarkably, Pogba has not played a full 90-minute match in over three years. His last complete game came on March 12, 2022, when he featured in Manchester United’s 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. Since then, injuries, off-field controversies, and his suspension have severely disrupted his career.
Now, as he embarks on the next chapter, Pogba faces a crucial decision. Whether he chooses the bright lights of Miami or the financial allure of Saudi Arabia, his return will be closely watched by football fans worldwide.
