Air Arabia on Saturday confirmed it is implementing a global Airbus-mandated software update for its Airbus A320 aircraft, aiming to ensure minimal disruption for passengers.
The recall affects around 6,000 A320-family jets worldwide, following a directive issued by Airbus to address potential software and hardware issues caused by intense solar radiation.
“We confirm that we have received the directive issued by Airbus concerning the A320 aircraft type operated by airlines worldwide, which requires a number of aircraft to undergo specific software and technical updates,” an Air Arabia spokesperson said.
The Sharjah-based low-cost carrier added that it expects to complete all updates by the end of Saturday and will notify passengers directly of any schedule adjustments.
“We are working to ensure minimal impact on our customers. We regret any inconvenience this may cause, as we remain fully committed to ensuring the highest safety standards,” the statement added.
Data from Cirium shows that UAE airlines operate 106 A320-family aircraft, with Air Arabia and Air Arabia Abu Dhabi alone operating 67 of them.
Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, which operates 39 A320 jets, has already completed the software update, resuming normal scheduled operations across its fleet.
“Thanks to the exceptional efforts of our operational and technical teams, the update was completed quickly and with minimal disruption, despite this being one of the busiest travel periods at Zayed International Airport ahead of the long weekend,” Etihad said in a statement.
The recall was triggered after a JetBlue A320 flight experienced a serious flight control anomaly, causing rapid descent and injuries to passengers, prompting Airbus to issue the urgent advisory to operators worldwide.
Saj Ahmad, chief analyst at StrategicAero Research, described the event as “unprecedented” in aviation history, noting the potential implications for a fleet exceeding 6,000 aircraft.
“Airbus is keen to understand and remedy this issue across affected A320 jets. At this stage, we cannot rule out impacts on Airbus widebody families like the A330, A340, A350, and A380,” Ahmad said.
The analyst also pointed out that airlines across the UAE and GCC, including Saudi carriers flyadeal and flynas, as well as Jazeera Airways, SalamAir, EgyptAir, Royal Jordanian, Pakistan International, and Kuwait Airways, are expected to be affected.
“Depending on the extent of the recall, aircraft cannot operate until software and hardware updates are completed. While software updates take a few hours, more invasive hardware changes can ground jets for days, affecting schedules,” Ahmad added.
