Afghanistan: Taliban rulers have detained several Britishers and Americans. A former freelance television journalist is also included who has been come to Afghanistan some 40 years back, said by both government and family members.
As per the statement by the British government, they stated this week there is a number of British nationals who are in the custody of the Taliban.
However, the government refused to give their identity to the media, ‘Hassina Syed’ the wife of Peter Jouvenal, a former freelancer cameraman, later turned businessman, said that she took her husband on December 13, 2021.
According to the US National Security Adviser ‘Jake Sullivan’, the “State of the Union” on Sunday that Washington was “actively working” to get the release of the American man from the Taliban custody. At the same time, he refused to say much, citing the “sensitivity of it”.
Along with the American detainee, more than four people belonged to British nationals in custody who remain publicly unidentified. It is not clear how many were detained together.
According to the ‘Syed’ an Afghan, her husband was in Afghanistan and searching for business opportunities, including investment in ‘Lithium mining” because Afghanistan is famous for lithium, a key component for energy storage batteries. Furthermore, she stated that he was travelling alone and did not have a link with any other detainees.
Jouvenal always worked as a freelancer cameraman during the 1980s Soviet invasion in Afghanistan and followed the country through its many wars. He married Syed, and they have three daughters.
Furthermore, Syed stated that no charges had been imposed on him. Jouvenal had been very careful to stay in regular touch with the Taliban government to ensure that they were aware of his activities and movements.
The Taliban did not respond to any request for comment on foreign nationals and Jouvenal in particular.
As per the statement by the British Foreign Minister, the British administration is discussing the matter with the Taliban.
Syed stated that her husband was alone and was not travelling with the other men who had been detained.
The Taliban made it clear that nobody is allowed to come in the Taliban without their proper documentation or at the same time can not even leave their country.
Syed stated that she fears that her husband may have gotten caught up in a Taliban investigation into attempts to transfer nationals out of the country secretly.
Syed said that she was too planning to go back to Afghan after her husband first trip looking for partners for mining ventures.
