Dubai is embracing a green future with the completion of seven major projects under the ‘Green Dubai Project,’ a Dh245-million initiative aimed at enhancing the city’s visual appeal while promoting sustainability.
The projects, focused on key intersections along Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail Roads, are designed to transform the emirate’s roads into vibrant, green corridors that reflect both its modern urban landscape and commitment to environmental stewardship.
The projects, which saw the planting of over 2.5 million flowers and ornamental plants alongside 6,500 trees, were completed as part of Dubai’s ongoing efforts to create a more sustainable and aesthetically pleasing environment for residents and visitors.
The new greenery is complemented by state-of-the-art, water-efficient irrigation systems designed to minimize water usage and optimize resources in line with global sustainability standards.
Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, emphasized the initiative’s importance, stating, “These projects demonstrate our dedication to developing green infrastructure and fostering a healthy, comfortable environment for residents and visitors, enhancing quality of life by expanding green spaces, upholding environmental sustainability, and optimizing natural resources.”
The initiative was undertaken in response to the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, who has long championed sustainable urban development and environmental conservation.
It reflects Dubai’s broader vision of blending urban development with natural beauty, creating a harmonious environment that balances both modernity and nature.
Four major projects were completed along Sheikh Zayed Road (SZR), one of Dubai’s busiest arterial routes, where extensive beautification efforts were made at key intersections, including those with Al Yelayes Street and Al Jameel Street (formerly Jarn Al Sabkha Street).
The planting work covered an area of 250,000 square meters, including nearly 1.5 million flowers and plants, as well as the addition of 3,500 trees.
Additionally, 290,000 square meters of soil mulching were applied, helping prevent erosion and enhancing the area’s visual appeal.
Al Khail Road also received a significant facelift, with three major projects covering over 625,000 square meters. These projects focused on the intersections with Al Meydan Street, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street, and Umm Suqeim Street.
The beautification efforts on Al Khail included the planting of 1 million flowers and plants, 3,000 trees, and the application of 143,654 square meters of soil mulch.
The projects are part of a broader environmental push by Dubai Municipality, which has been consistently increasing its green efforts in recent years.
In 2023 alone, the municipality planted over 185,000 trees—averaging 500 trees per day—leading to an expansion of green spaces by 234 hectares, up from 170 hectares in 2022.
With these new projects, Dubai is not only improving its streetscapes but also setting a global example in integrating urban development with sustainable environmental practices.
The city’s commitment to green infrastructure and the health and well-being of its residents and visitors continues to grow, making Dubai a model for future urban planning worldwide.
