In a recent report published by the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT), a comprehensive overview of Saudi Arabia’s workforce sheds light on the labour landscape 2023.

The findings indicate a delicate balance between the significant number of employees working extended hours and the measures in place to ensure their health and safety.

According to the report, a substantial 45.8 percent of employees in Saudi Arabia logged more than 40 hours of work per week in the year 2023.

This statistic raises questions about the work-life balance and the potential impact on the overall well-being of the workforce.

The demands of the job market, coupled with the ambitious goals of Vision 2030, may contribute to the prevalence of extended working hours.

However, the study also highlights positive aspects of the work environment in the Kingdom. Approximately 46.6 per cent of the workforce, precisely 46.6 per cent, has received training on health and safety procedures.

This suggests a commitment to ensuring employees have the knowledge and skills to navigate their work responsibilities safely.

Moreover, nearly half of the workforce, accounting for 48.7 per cent, has the advantage of a dedicated health and safety department.

This institutional support is crucial in fostering a secure and healthy working environment. The presence of such departments reflects an organizational commitment to prioritize the well-being of employees.

One of the critical indicators of a health-conscious workplace is the provision of regular medical check-ups, and the report states that 59.2 percent of employees in Saudi Arabia have access to such check-ups provided by their employers.

This proactive approach to employee health underscores the recognition that preventative measures are integral to ensuring a robust and productive workforce.

The report delves into healthcare coverage, revealing that an impressive 89.7 per cent of employees in the Kingdom have access to primary healthcare.

While this is a positive sign, the document notes that ‘work-related stress’ was reported as the most prevalent work-related health issue in the past 12 months, affecting 3.2 per cent of the workforce.

This highlights an area where further attention and support may be needed to address the mental health aspects of the work environment.

In contrast, most of the labour force, standing at 83.5 per cent, reported not suffering from work-related health issues.

This indicates a generally healthy working population, with the majority navigating their professional responsibilities without significantly adverse effects on their well-being.

The gender dynamics in the workforce also come to light in the report, showcasing a nuanced picture. Male employees in Saudi Arabia worked an average of 8.1 hours daily in 2023.

In contrast, female workers logged slightly fewer hours, averaging eight hours daily.

This information provides insight into the evolving roles of men and women in the Saudi workforce. It may serve as a foundation for further discussions on gender equality in the workplace.

As Saudi Arabia continues its journey towards economic diversification and modernization under Vision 2030, understanding and addressing the workforce dynamics becomes paramount.

The data presented by GASTAT offers a valuable snapshot, paving the way for informed discussions and potential interventions to enhance the overall well-being and productivity of the Saudi workforce.

Striking the right balance between productivity and employee welfare remains a critical challenge, and this report serves as a compass for navigating that delicate equilibrium.
