India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) has widened its investigation into the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, bringing Mehul Choksi’s daughter, Priyanka Choksi, and his brother, Chetan Chunnibhai Choksi, under the scanner. The agency is examining their alleged financial dealings and possible links to funds suspected to be connected with the ₹13,000-crore banking scam, along with other transactions forming part of Choksi’s broader financial network.
The latest action follows the filing of a chargesheet against Rohan Choksi, Mehul Choksi’s son, in connection with the case. A special PMLA court is expected to take cognisance of the chargesheet and proceed with trial formalities.
Notably, the entire money is managed by Mehul Choksi. The money that is being used by his family or for other purposes is being provided by Choksi through money laundering.
In addition to that, the family of Choksi has great political influence. They are well connected and always used their connections to evade legal proceedings over the years.
The intensified scrutiny comes against the backdrop of developments in the United Kingdom. A UK court has directed Choksi to deposit £800,000 as part of ongoing legal proceedings, reportedly linked to costs and compliance requirements in connection with related cases. The order places additional financial pressure on the fugitive diamantaire, who is facing multiple legal battles across jurisdictions. Investigation sources suggest that Indian authorities are closely examining whether funds are being mobilised through family members or associates to meet such overseas legal obligations.
According to officials familiar with the probe, investigators suspect that funds allegedly controlled by Choksi may have been routed through layered transactions and intermediaries to conceal their origin, a pattern consistent with money laundering practices. The ED is assessing whether any such funds have been used to finance legal expenses, asset maintenance, or other expenditures abroad.
The probe has also gained renewed attention following Choksi’s arrest in Belgium in connection with extradition-related proceedings. His detention marked a significant development in India’s efforts to secure his return, although the legal process remains subject to judicial scrutiny under Belgian and international law. Authorities are monitoring the outcome of these proceedings closely.
