St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew paid a courtesy call on United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. During their meeting, they discussed key concerning Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Reportedly, the discussion included the matters, that particularly impacted the climate change, the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) and the need for concessional funding. Both the leaders emphasized the importance of global collaboration in addressing the challenges that are posed by the climate change.
Considering this important meeting, PM Drew has also shared a note on his official social media handle. He expressed that he paid a courtesy call on United Nations Secretary-General – Antonio Guterres.
Prime Minister Drew mentioned that both the leaders discussed several issues of importance to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) such as St. Kitts and Nevis that included the impact of climate change, the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) and the need for concessional funding.
As per the sources, the United Nations General Assembly has adopted a “Pact for the Future”, that the UN Secretary – General Antonio Guterres described as a landmark agreement, which is a “step-change towards more effective, inclusive and network multilateralism”.
The pact also included taking over a responsible and sustainable digital future that was adopted without a vote on Sunday at the start of a two-day Summit of the Future.
At the summit, PM Drew also witnessed the agreement that came after some nine months of negotiations. Guterres also told that they are here to bring multilateralism back from the brink.
Notably, as an opener for the annual high-level week of the UN General Assembly, numerous of heads of the state and government had gathered for the adoption of the pact.
The ‘Summit of the Future’ is a high-level event, that brings world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how people deliver a good and better present and safeguard the future.
However, the effective global cooperation is increasingly critical to the survival but is difficult to achieve in an atmosphere of mistrust and used the outdated structures that no longer reflect political and economic realities of present era.
At the Summit, held in September 2024, the world leaders will convene at the United Nations to adopt the Pact of the Future, that included a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations.
