St. Kitts and Nevis represented itself at the official launch of the Afreximbank Africa Diaspora Centre. The opening was held at The Africa Center in Harlem, New York on Monday, September 23, 2024 by Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs – Dr. Denzil Douglas.
The event marked a significant step towards strengthening the connection between Africa and its diaspora. It was hosted by Afreximbank in partnership with The Africa Center. The launch showcased several initiatives that aimed at fostering deep and sustainable ties between Africa and its global diaspora.
The key message from the event was the aspiration for the Centre to serve as a vital link for cultural and economic growth. The address also considered the educational space that emphasises Africa’s rich history, extending it beyond the narrative of slavery.
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew shared the glimpses from the event and meeting on his official social media handle and expressed that he had the distinct pleasure of welcoming President of the African Export Import Bank-Afreximbank – Dr. Benedict Oramah, to the Mission in New York.
PM Drew further explained that they had the opportunity to discuss a number of critical investment ventures in St. Kitts and Nevis. They also discussed the importance of strengthening ties between the Caribbean and Africa for the mutual benefit of both regions.
Foreign Minister Dr. Douglas delivered the remarks, his presence reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to support the efforts that promote stronger cultural, economic and historical relations between Africa and its diaspora communities.
The Distinguished speakers included President of Afreximbank – Prof. Dr. Benedict Oramah, who emphasised the potential of the centre to drive commercial and knowledge-based exchanges between the continent and its diaspora.
The global event also featured high-level panel discussions that addressed the role of Africa in increasing the divided global landscape. The evening concluded with a fashion show and culinary presentation, it celebrated the shared heritage of African and Caribbean cultures, which recognised the ongoing connection between the continent and its diaspora.
Afreximbank Africa Diaspora Centre aims to become a central hub for growth, that provides the African diaspora with opportunities for engagement and collaboration that will shape the future of Africa.
