St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew marks a statement on the new 6-Megawatt Temporary Power Plant, introduced by SKELEC. The establishment marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to enhance the electrical infrastructure of the island and meet the growing demands of the population.
Reportedly, the St. Kitts Electricity Company Ltd. (SKELEC) has commissioned a new 6 MW temporary plant, which will help to stabilise the supply of electricity while it carries out critical maintenance on its generator fleet.
At the commissioning of the new Power Plant at the SKELEC, on October 04, 2024, Prime Minister – Dr. Terrance Drew highlighted that St. Kitts and Nevis is experiencing transition towards reducing its dependence on fossil fuel by carefully implementing the renewable energy practices and projects.
As per the sources, the energy transition, is one of the seven pillars, upon which the government’s sustainable island state agenda hinges. It is underpinned by the build-out of the dual-fuel power plant and battery energy storage plant in St. Kitts, and also introduced the renewable energy-powered desalination plants.
Considering this, PM Drew said that they have determined through careful analysis, as they were to transition St. Kitts and Nevis to renewable energy and would transform the nation in its totality.
Prime Minister Dr. Drew added that it will transform the fiscal situation because renewable energy would cost at least two-thirds less than its original cost to generate from fossil fuel.
According to Drew, implementation of the new power plant will create a lot more new jobs in the green energy space. Noting, the decrease in the cost of generation, anything else can be done in St. Kitts and Nevis as the cost of operations will go down.
PM Drew confidently indicated that if the energy transition, the government of St. Kitts and Nevis envisions a different stratum of development.
The Federal Government has complemented the energy transition and collaborated with the Nevis Island Administration (NIA). Together it is making a meaningful progress in geothermal exploration on Nevis to deliver the cleaner, cheaper energy for the people of the Federation.
