St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has once again confirmed the commitment of government to protect consumers from price gouging and introduced reduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) from 17% to 13%.
PM Drew emphasized the tax relief measure which was implemented to ease the financial burdens that are caused by global inflation and should directly benefit the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis. The decision of the federation to reduce VAT was deliberate and is designed to provide immediate relief to the people who navigate rising costs.
However, it is a deep concern and unacceptable for some businesses to raise prices and deny the public benefits of the reduction. The government will not stand and allow such behaviour to go unchecked.
Prime Minister Drew announced that the Inland Revenue Department and Customs would intensify the monitoring efforts and address cases of price manipulation. Such measures include reviewing invoices, profit margins and pricing structures to ensure that the businesses comply with the VAT reduction and pass on the savings to consumers.
Considering this, PM Drew called on the media and citizens to actively report the instances of unfair pricing to the appropriate authorities and said that this is a collective effort. “The government, the media and the public must work together to hold businesses accountable and ensure that relief reaches those who are in need of it.”
Remarks by PM Drew reflect a broader context of global inflation crisis that has affected the countries worldwide and has raised the cost of essential goods and services.
Furthermore, St. Kitts and Nevis has experienced higher prices for food, utilities and other necessities. The VAT reduction is a part of suite of measures which were introduced by the government to combat such challenges, comprising of the subsidies on electricity and water, the launch of the Budget Boost Wallet as well as the initiatives to increase local food production through agricultural modernization.
Prime Minister Drew expressed that it is disheartening to hear that while the government is doing its part to support the people, there are some people who seek to gain profit unfairly at their expense. He mentioned that it is a matter of economics, fairness and ethics for which they will take swift and decisive action to ensure compliance.
He also enlightened all regarding the significance of these measures in fostering a sustainable and inclusive economic environment. He noted that the VAT reduction is designed to help stimulate consumer spending and benefit businesses in the long run through increased sales volume.
PM Drew explained that this is not a zero-sum game. According to him, when consumers have more purchasing power, it creates a ripple effect that benefits the entire economy. Businesses have a responsibility to support the vision.
