Egypt: The Head of the Environmental Affairs Authority, Dr Ali Abu Sunnah, heads the steering committee’s first meeting on the Model Mediterranean Work Plan in Athens. Egypt’s participation in the forum reflects its important regional role in preserving the coastal environment and biodiversity in the Mediterranean basin.
As per the updates, Dr Ali Abu Sunnah, Executive Chairman of the Environmental Affairs Agency, presided over the Egyptian delegation participating in the first meeting of the Steering Committee on the Model Mediterranean Work Plan by 2020 with an invitation from the Mediterranean Action Plan.
In addition, the executive arm of the Barcelona Agreement for the Protection of the Mediterranean Environment, held in Athens, Greece, with the participation of several member states In the Barcelona agreement to protect the Mediterranean environment from pollution, France, Italy, Morocco and Greece,
as well as the Arab Republic of Egypt and several international organizations, including the Union for the Mediterranean, the International Committee on Fisheries and the Regional Center for the region under special protection.
The reports have stated that the meeting has included several key pillars, the need to preserve the biodiversity and coastal biodiversity of the Mediterranean, take care of fisheries and work to reduce pollution in the Mediterranean, especially plastic pollution, as well as support the maritime transport sector.
Abu Sunnah explained that the discussions witnessed by the meeting discussed the financial mechanisms available for implementation and the proposed institutional framework for the work plan in coordination with numerous partners and international organizations.
The authorities have stated that the proposed initiative “Mediterranean model sea by 2020” includes introducing a new financial mechanism to finance activities that achieve these goals serving the issue of climate change.
“The projects that would reduce emissions and pollution have been obtained from Six areas are a priority, in the context of international commitments imposed on the Mediterranean countries as one of the most threatened areas from the effects of climate change,” said reports.
