IRAQ, NINEWA: Farmers face rising uncertainty as drought, erratic rainfall, and climate shifts threaten livelihoods and force adaptation in traditional agricultural communities
In the farming village of Ewaynat in Iraq’s Ninewa province, life once moved in harmony with the seasons. Planting, rainfall, and harvest followed a predictable rhythm that generations of farmers relied upon. Today, that rhythm is increasingly uncertain.
Farmers say years of drought and shifting weather patterns have disrupted agricultural cycles, making it harder to predict when to sow crops or expect rainfall. What was once routine has become a gamble.
“The land had a rhythm,” says Mohammed, a local farmer. “Now that rhythm feels broken.”
For decades, farmers like Mohammed depended on consistent seasonal changes. Rainfall patterns guided their decisions, and the land responded reliably. But over the past ten years, that stability has eroded.
Erratic weather has forced farmers to reconsider even planting crops. Each season now comes with financial risks, as investments in seeds, fuel, and labour may not yield returns.
“We suffered many losses,” Mohammed explains. “Sometimes we hesitated to plant crops at all. Ten years ago, this kind of uncertainty was rare.”
Ewaynat’s experience reflects a wider crisis affecting rural Iraq. Climate change has intensified drought conditions, reduced water availability, and increased temperatures across the region.
In agricultural communities where livelihoods depend entirely on the land, these changes are deeply felt. Farming is not just an economic activity but a way of life tied to identity and heritage.
As conditions worsen, families face difficult choices. Some consider leaving their ancestral land in search of more stable income in urban areas.
Younger farmers are particularly affected. Twenty-five-year-old Fahad has seen firsthand how unpredictable rainfall can devastate crops and income.
“Low rainfall has greatly affected us,” Fahad says. “There were seasons when drought left us with no harvest at all.”
He warns that if conditions continue to deteriorate, more farmers may abandon agriculture altogether. Migration to cities could become the only option for survival.
Despite these challenges, efforts are underway to help communities adapt. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is supporting farmers with training in climate-smart agriculture.
These programs focus on techniques such as dry farming, zero tillage, and conservation agriculture. The aim is to help farmers cope with reduced rainfall while maintaining productivity.
Dry farming methods allow crops to grow with minimal water, while zero tillage reduces soil disturbance. These approaches help retain soil moisture and improve long-term soil health.
For farmers struggling with rising costs, these methods also offer financial relief. Reduced tractor use means lower fuel consumption, a significant expense for many households.
“Agriculture used to cost us about six barrels of fuel a year,” Fahad explains. “Now we are learning ways to reduce that.”
Modern equipment and improved techniques are also making a difference. Farmers can now rely less on frequent rainfall, increasing their chances of successful harvests even in dry conditions.
“Modern equipment has reduced our need for rainfall,” Mohammed says. “Even one or two good rains can be enough.”
Support from local institutions is playing a key role. The Department of Agriculture provides access to machinery, allowing farmers to experiment with new techniques without heavy upfront investment.
Meanwhile, the University of Mosul’s Conservation Agriculture Research Centre is contributing research and innovation. By studying climate-resilient practices, the centre helps bridge the gap between science and everyday farming.
This collaboration ensures that farmers are not left to face climate challenges alone. Instead, they gain access to knowledge and tools that can improve resilience.
So far, around 70 farmers in Ewaynat have received hands-on training and small grants to adopt climate-smart practices. These initiatives are gradually transforming how farming is approached in the village.
Beyond technical benefits, the training offers something equally important: hope. For many farmers, it reinforces the idea that agriculture still has a future, even in a changing climate.
Knowledge sharing within the community is also accelerating progress. Farmers who adopt new techniques often pass them on to neighbours and relatives, helping spread innovation organically.
However, challenges remain significant. Water scarcity continues to threaten productivity, and rising temperatures place additional stress on crops. Across Iraq, rivers and waterways are drying up, compounding the impact of reduced rainfall. This broader environmental crisis adds urgency to local adaptation efforts.
Experts warn that without sustained support, rural communities may face long-term decline. Migration could reshape demographics, leaving villages with shrinking populations and weakened economies.
Yet, in Ewaynat, resilience is evident. Farmers are not giving up on their land. Instead, they are finding ways to adapt and continue their traditions. Through a combination of modern techniques, institutional support, and community cooperation, the village is slowly adjusting to new realities.
For Mohammed and Fahad, the goal is clear: to preserve their way of life while adapting to a changing environment. “Farming is part of who we are,” Fahad says. “We want to continue, but we need the tools to survive.”
As climate change reshapes agriculture across Iraq, Ewaynat stands as both a warning and an example. The challenges are real and growing, but so too is the determination to overcome them.
In the dry fields of Ninewa, seeds are once again being planted—not just in soil, but in the hope that farming communities can endure.
