On December 1st, a Gulf Air Boeing 787, operating flight GF5 from Bahrain to Manchester, declared an emergency mid-flight due to a serious engine issue, forcing the aircraft to divert to Kuwait City.
The incident, which occurred roughly an hour into the flight, has caused significant delays for passengers, with the aircraft remaining grounded in Kuwait for further investigation.
Flight GF5, a regular service between Bahrain and Manchester, was being operated by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, registered A9C-FB. This aircraft, delivered to Gulf Air in June 2018, is part of the airline’s fleet of ten Boeing 787-9s.
The aircraft had been cruising toward its destination when it began descending and turning south, signaling an emergency to air traffic control. Shortly after, the flight crew opted to divert to Kuwait City.
Reports from The Aviation Herald confirm that the emergency was related to a malfunction in the aircraft’s left-hand engine, which required an immediate shutdown.
A passenger onboard claimed that the engine had caught fire and emitted smoke, prompting the crew to act swiftly to ensure the safety of everyone on board.
Fortunately, the Boeing 787-9 landed safely in Kuwait City without further complications. However, the incident has left the aircraft grounded in Kuwait as maintenance crews assess the damage caused by the engine failure.
The exact cause of the engine issue remains under investigation, and it is unclear when the aircraft will return to commercial service.
As a result of the diversion, passengers aboard the Gulf Air flight faced a delay of approximately 25 hours.
Gulf Air promptly arranged for a replacement aircraft to continue the journey to Manchester, but the long wait caused inconvenience for many travelers. The airline has yet to provide further details on when the grounded aircraft, A9C-FB, will be cleared for service again.
This incident marks a significant operational disruption for Gulf Air, with the airline facing the task of determining the extent of the engine damage and ensuring the aircraft is safe for future flights.
Passengers on Flight GF5 are advised to stay in touch with the airline for updates on the rescheduled flight and any compensation that may be offered due to the delay.
Gulf Air’s commitment to passenger safety was evident in the swift decision-making during the emergency, and the airline has promised to continue providing updates as more information becomes available.
