Baghdad – Iraq’s Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, has announced the reopening of Mosul International Airport on June 10, 2024, as part of the ongoing reconstruction efforts in Nineveh governorate.
The announcement was made during a visit to the airport on Sunday, where Al-Sudani inspected the progress of the renovation projects and was briefed on the improvements to the airport’s infrastructure.
According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the airport’s runway and terminal development are progressing at a rapid pace, with the completion rate now exceeding 80%.
The opening of Mosul International Airport will mark a significant milestone in the region’s recovery, following years of destruction and conflict.
Mosul International Airport, once a vital hub for both civil and military operations, was severely damaged when ISIS militants seized control of the facility in 2014.
The airport, which had previously been operational, became a key military site during the ISIS occupation until it was liberated by the Iraqi army in 2017.
In the years following its liberation, the airport underwent extensive renovation and de-mining activities, which were completed by November 2019.
The reopening of the airport is seen as essential for boosting the regional economy, enhancing local infrastructure, and fostering stronger ties within Iraq and neighboring countries.
“The restoration of Mosul International Airport is more than just an infrastructure project; it is a symbol of the resilience and determination of the people of Nineveh and Iraq as a whole,” said Al-Sudani.
“This is a key step in rebuilding our country, and it will provide a major boost to the local economy and improve transportation links throughout the region.”
The airport was originally constructed in 1990 as a civil airport, but it became a focal point during the ISIS occupation, which left significant damage to the runway and facilities.
After its liberation, the Iraqi government focused on restoring the airport to international standards, partnering with global airport management firms such as SEA Milan Airports and Aeroports de Paris Ingenierie to oversee the rehabilitation efforts.
Minister of Transport Razzaq Al-Saadawi emphasized in late October 2023 that the renovations were carried out in compliance with international standards, with plans to make the airport a modern and secure gateway for both domestic and international flights.
The reopening of Mosul International Airport also holds symbolic significance, as it coincides with the anniversary of the city’s occupation by ISIS in June 2014.
The event serves as a reminder of the immense challenges faced by the region and the progress made since the defeat of the terror group.
For the residents of Nineveh, the airport’s reopening represents a vital step in the region’s reconstruction.
It will play a key role in economic recovery, attracting investment and boosting tourism, while also providing a critical transportation link for the northern part of the country.
The airport’s restoration marks the culmination of years of hard work and determination to rebuild and revitalize Mosul, once a thriving cultural and commercial center.
The reopening of Mosul International Airport is poised to further strengthen Iraq’s transportation infrastructure and contribute to the country’s continued recovery from years of conflict.
