Yemen’s Houthi rebel group has claimed responsibility for a series of drone attacks targeting the Israeli port city of Eilat and a commercial vessel in the Red Sea. The Iran-backed group asserts that these actions are intended to exert pressure on Israel to end its conflict in Gaza.

Drone Attacks on Eilat and Commercial Vessel

On Tuesday, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea announced that the group had conducted drone attacks on Eilat and “other areas in occupied Palestine.”

Additionally, the rebels launched missiles at the MSC United vessel in the Red Sea after it reportedly ignored three warning calls. The shipping company, MSC Mediterranean, confirmed the attack on MSC United VIII en route from King Abdullah port in Saudi Arabia to Karachi, Pakistan.

Fortunately, the crew is reported safe, and the company is conducting a thorough assessment of the incident, notifying the US-led naval coalition in the Red Sea.

International Response and Incidents at Sea

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) received reports of an incident off the coast of Yemen involving drones and an explosion approximately 60 nautical miles outside Hodeidah port.

The UKMTO confirmed that the commercial vessel faced a drone attack, but no damage occurred, and the ship is safely continuing its voyage.

These incidents follow earlier explosions near Hodeidah on the same day, adding to the mounting tension in the region. The US has accused the Houthis of launching over 100 drone and missile attacks, targeting commercial shipping vessels with connections to multiple countries.

The Red Sea has become a hotspot for Houthi activities, causing disruptions along vital shipping routes and prompting some companies to reroute vessels at considerable expense.

The Context of Regional Tensions

The Houthi attacks in the Red Sea occur against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the region.

The group, controlling significant parts of northern Yemen, has not only targeted commercial vessels but has also launched missiles and drones at Israel.

In response, Israel has initiated a forceful campaign in the Gaza Strip, leading to concerns about a broader regional escalation.

Israel’s assault on Gaza has claimed the lives of over 20,000 Palestinians, intensifying international worries about the volatile situation.

The Houthi rebel group’s actions in the Red Sea have added complexity to the security challenges in the region, prompting the United States to announce a security coalition aimed at safeguarding commercial shipping from further attacks.

As part of this effort, the US is increasing its naval presence in the area, as evidenced by a US destroyer refuelling in Djibouti on Tuesday.

Disruptions and Global Concerns

The Houthi raids in the Red Sea have not only caused disruptions to maritime activities but have also raised global concerns about the safety of commercial shipping.

With the US-led naval coalition on high alert, the international community is closely monitoring the situation, seeking diplomatic solutions to de-escalate tensions and ensure the security of vital maritime routes.

In conclusion, the recent drone attacks by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea mark a dangerous escalation of hostilities in a region already grappling with multiple conflicts.

The international community faces the challenge of addressing these complex issues to prevent further disruptions and foster stability in this crucial maritime corridor.
