The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Wednesday that its troops arrested several members of an Iranian-backed terrorist cell operating in southern Syria. The operation, which took place overnight, was conducted based on intelligence gathered through recent interrogations, the military said.
During the raid, IDF soldiers uncovered a cache of weapons, including firearms and grenades, in areas where the suspects were apprehended. The exact number of arrests has not been disclosed, but the operation was described as a targeted strike aimed at preventing further Iranian entrenchment near Israel’s northern borders.
A commander in the field emphasized the strategic importance of the action. “We are working day and night to ensure that the residents of the Golan Heights can sleep in peace,” he said. “We will not allow terrorist organizations or hostile elements to establish themselves in this area.”
The operation highlights ongoing IDF efforts to thwart Iran’s attempts to establish a military foothold in Syria, particularly close to the border with Israel. The area has long been a flashpoint due to its proximity to the Golan Heights, and Iranian-backed militias are known to operate in the region under the guise of local proxy groups.
Earlier this week, the IDF’s 210th Division detained several other suspects in southern Syria as part of a broader security campaign. Forces from this division have been actively deployed across strategic zones—from Mount Hermon to the so-called “border triangle,” where the borders of Israel, Syria, and Jordan converge.
In a related operation in May, IDF troops discovered combat gear in the same region, including rocket shells and landmines, suggesting an ongoing effort by hostile forces to prepare for potential cross-border assaults.
Military analysts have noted that these recent operations underscore a significant uptick in Israeli intelligence and special operations activity beyond its northern frontier. While the IDF rarely confirms activities deep inside Syria, this latest public statement marks a departure from its usual ambiguity, likely intended as a message to Tehran and Damascus.
The Israeli military has repeatedly warned of Iran’s efforts to transfer advanced weapons to Hezbollah and other proxies via Syria. These recent arrests are seen as part of Israel’s broader strategy to disrupt these networks before they can pose a direct threat.
Security sources believe that the Iranian-linked operatives arrested this week were planning attacks or facilitating the movement of arms and fighters along the border zone. The discovery of weapons supports that assessment.
The IDF reiterated that it remains committed to maintaining the security of the northern border and will continue to take preventive actions as necessary. No Israeli casualties were reported during the operation.
The arrests mark a significant development in Israel’s ongoing shadow conflict with Iranian forces and their affiliates across the region.
