The United States of America is mulling for possible mass evacuations of its citizens from Israel and Lebanon. This decision is being considered in case the war against Hamas terrorists in Gaza sparks a regional conflagration.
The top official of the U.S.A. familiar with the government’s contingency planning told That the Americans living in the two Neighbouring countries were of particular concern as their life could be in danger if war goes on for a long period of time.
As per estimates of the State Department, around 600,000 U.S. citizens resided in Israel, and another 86,000 were believed to be in Lebanon.
The officials stressed that, at present, mass evacuation is unlikely but can be executed in case of deteriorating conditions. However, it “would be irresponsible not to have a plan for everything,” one official said.
While Israel prepares for a major ground attack to destroy Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Hezbollah militants continue their attacks across the border from Lebanon’s side.
The U.S. is moving to improve its military posture in the Middle East as a reaction to “recent escalations by Iran and its proxy forces” across the region.
This preparation includes the activation of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and additional Patriot air-defense missile system battalions. The U.S.A. is also planning to involve placing other troops in the region, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said.
It is to be specifically mentioned that the U.S.A. has already put 2,000 troops on high alert status for possible quick deployment to the Middle East region.
There has been an increase in the number of attacks against U.S. positions in the Middle East following Hamas’s Oct. 7 operation against Israel.
The Pentagon said last Thursday that it had shot down missiles fired from Yemen that may have been headed to Israel.
Meanwhile, the U.S.A. also positioned two carrier strike groups in the eastern Mediterranean to deter other Iranian terror proxies, such as Hezbollah, from trying to take any advantage of the situation. The United States has also been supplying Israel with military supplies and equipment.
As per some reports U.S.A. is “advising” Israel to delay its ground invasion of Gaza to destroy Hamas. This U.S.A. move is to ensure the release of hostages held by Hamas and for more humanitarian aid to enter the coastal enclave.
