Dominica: Octavia Alfred, the education minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, in her recent appearance mentioned about the works to take place in the education sector in the current term. She mentioned that due to the various occasions and plans, the ministry is going to be very busy.
Minister Octavia Alfred mentioned in her statement about the reopening of works and the education institutes after the holidays of Easter marked an initiation to the final term of the academic year of 2023-2024.
The minister continued her statement while mentioning about the events and contests that are organised by keeping students in the mind for their better growth physically and mentally.
Alfred said, “In addition to the assessment we will also see the closing of the Math Power Contest. We will observe International Spanish Day, International Girls in ICT Day, we will have our science fair, and World Books Day will be observed. The secondary school debate competition will also move into its final round.”
She is also expecting for the District 4-H Festivals to take place in the recent times which intended to have a competition of dinner plates in this term with a public speaking. With the events and competitions for the overall growth of the young minds of students, she talked about the academic exams.
Minister Octavia Alfred talked about the CSEC Exams which are also going to take place this term. She stated that the CSEC Exams for foreign languages will be initiated and continue in the month of May. With this National Assessment will also be scheduled for this term as per her words.
Minister said, “We see the beginning of the CSEC Exams, for the foreign languages CSEC will continue all the way up to May. We will also do our Grade 6 National Assessment this term and for the very first time which is significant, the Grade 2 and Grade 4 national assessments which were previously administered in October will be administered in May.”
She added in her words, “This will give us enough time to train our teachers and to ensure that they have the materials, so that as soon as students enter Grade 3 and Grade 5 those who need this attention…can be given this attention as they begin the new school year.”
The education minister also highlighted the plans of the remedial programs they are looking to launch such as to address the needs of students of particular groups. After the recent assessment, the ministry wants to add some programs in the new school year on which they are currently working.
On that minister quoted, “So, after marking the assessment, we will target common problems among all of the schools in Dominica, common weaknesses, and then we will prepare remedial programs to address these weaknesses.”
