Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson broke his silence on Tuesday, declaring his full support for new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Johnson, known for his strained relations with Sunak, tweeted, “Congratulations to Rishi Sunak on this historic day, the right moment for every Governor to give the new Prime Minister his full and sincere support.”

Johnson had abandoned his candidacy for prime minister, paving the way for Sunak at a time when his rival, Penny Mordaunt, did not qualify for this race.

In rescinding his candidacy, Johnson told Sunak he was convinced he would have “a good chance of returning to Downing Street” had he decided to stay in the race.

Johnson resigned in July after a series of resignations in his government, including the resignation of Sunak.

Earlier on Tuesday, King Charles Sonak formally appointed Prime Minister, shortly after Liz Truss submitted her resignation to him.
