English musician, singer, and activist Peter Gabriel shared an extraordinary story of a Kurdish singer Nudem Durak on his official Facebook handle, expressing profound grief about her situation. 

In his post, Peter Gabriel addressed the situation as profoundly miserably for the Kurdish singer as she is serving 19 years of imprisonment in Turkey.

What was the crime of the Kurdish singer and artist? 

According to Peter Gabriel, her only crime was to sing songs in her native language for her people. Furthermore, Gabriel stated that she did what we all do in the music industry worldwide.  

Peter further mentioned several campaigns by various artists and musicians in her support. Roger waters, an English songwriter and singer, gave her a guitar signed by many other musicians as a symbol of support. Gabriel said he is also honoured to participate in such a move. 

I was first made aware of Nûdem’s tragic situation by my daughter, who was working for a freedom of expression project called The Voice Project, and we sent some messages at that time for her’’. Peter said. 

‘’He stated that it is a matter of deep sadness that she is still in jail and serving an unfair sentence. She should be out’’. He noted.   

Moreover, the English singer expressed his wishes and hope the Turkish government and judicial system would reconsider her case with compassion and empathy.

As per the reports, at first, she was sentenced to imprisonment for ten and a half years by the Turkish judicial system, extending to nineteen straight years without any further charges or conviction.

Nude was arrested in 2015 on the charges of singing Kurdish political songs In her native language. She was famous and loved among the community for local folk songs, where she taught folk music in the Kurdish language to young children. 

She is currently being held in the E-type closed prison in Mardin, Turkey, and she has been scheduled to serve her sentence in 2034.
