Baghdad – The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced on Monday a significant initiative to combat the country’s chronic power shortages by installing solar panels on the rooftops of government buildings.

This move is part of a broader strategy to diversify Iraq’s energy sources and reduce its dependence on gas and fossil fuels for electricity generation.

Spokesperson for the Ministry, Ahmed Musa, disclosed to the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that discussions are currently in progress with both local and international companies to facilitate the installation of these solar systems.

The ministry has identified 546 government buildings as prime candidates for the initiative, marking a crucial step in addressing the energy crisis that has plagued the nation for years.

However, this output falls short of the national demand, which is estimated at 48,000 megawatts, particularly during peak summer months when temperatures soar above 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit).

The Iraqi government has faced increasing pressure to tackle the persistent power outages that can last up to 10 hours daily, especially during the scorching summer months.

The country heavily relies on gas imports from Iran to meet its energy needs, but Musa noted that Iraq is making strides in various projects aimed at harnessing flared gas and renewable energy sources.

As part of its strategic initiatives, the ministry is exploring waste-to-energy projects alongside the development of solar energy facilities.

Collaborations are being sought with established companies in the renewable energy sector, including the UAE’s Masdar and Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power, to implement these solutions effectively.
