Iraq: The Prime Minister, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Iraq, Mr Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, has approved the recommendations of the special investigative committee formed on December 27, 2022.
PM Mohammed Shia Al Sudani stated that the committee reviewed complaints of human rights violations submitted by citizens against Lieutenant General Ahmad Taha Hashim Abu Ragheef, the head of the cancelled Committee of Diwani Order No. 29, and all affiliated members and officers.
As per the committee’s finding and investigations, the full investigation documents about the case will be referred to the judiciary and government for further action and procedures. Those found guilty, including detainees, fugitives, accused and all implicated individuals, will receive appropriate penalties and face charges in accordance with the law.
The committee has issued a recommendation that all personel involved in these violations and charges will be discharged, and strict measures will be implemented and introduced to prevent their future eligibility for public office.
In addition, the Commission of Integrity will investigate cases of financial inflation noticed by members of the cancelled committee and their close relatives. Additionally, administrative punishments will be issued to staff members who fail to report abuses and human rights violations.
Furthermore, based on the recommendations and following the established legal procedures stated in Instructions Committee No. (1) of 2012, and in accordance with Article (36 / First / D) of the Service and Retirement Law for the Security Forces No. (18) of 2011.
The Minister of Interior has approved the Administrative Investigation Committee’s decision to retire Lieutenant General Ahmad Taha Hashim Abu Ragheef, along with eight officers and members. This action was taken due to their violation of the law.
“We assure the Iraqi people that the special investigation committee conducted its procedures under the supervision and oversight of the judiciary, adhering to constitutional and legal processes,” said the Prime Minister.
The committee treated the accused, complainants, and witnesses respectfully and fairly, emphasizing adherence to the law and professionalism within government and judicial institutions.
