St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew announced the establishment of new Department of Citizen Security. The significant decision was declared during the opening statement at the Engagement of Stakeholders on Citizen Security by him, held on Friday, August 23, 2024.
The Department of Citizen Security of St. Kitts and Nevis has played a crucial role in advancing the public health approach of the government towards addressing crime and violence within the Federation.
It is an approach that emphasises the importance of addressing the root causes of crime, such as poverty, lack of education and mental health challenges, through comprehensive and coordinated efforts.
While addressing the people at the gathering, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew as a Minister of National Security highlighted that the Government’s commitment in creating the safer communities by focusing on prevention and early intervention.
PM Drew further said that in St. Kitts and Nevis they are already taking the steps to implement the public health approach. They are expanding the educational and vocational training programmes to provide young people with the necessary skills tat they need to succeed in the workforce.
He added that they are investing in mental health services to support those who are struggling with trauma, addiction or other issues that can lead to violence. He said that they are working to strengthen the family and community ties, which recognizes that they are strong and resilient communities, who are the foundation of a safe and peaceful society.
Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis also ensured that the effective execution of the strategy and said that the Department of Citizen Security will be tasked with overseeing the all-inclusive of the new approach by the government.
Dr. Drew also stated that to curb this problem they will establish a new department of Government that will be known as the Department of Citizen Security. the department will coordinate and ensure the holistic implementation of the new approach.
According to the National Security Minister – Dr. Terrance Drew also said that the Department of Citizen Security will be integral in fostering a safe and secure environment across St. Kitts and Nevis, while contributing to the overall well-being and prosperity of the nation.
Furthermore, the efforts of the government towards addressing the underlying causes of violence and crime are expected to yield the long-term benefits for the society, by enhancing the quality of life for all the citizens.
PM Drew also remarked that the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis remains committed towards ensuring the safety and security of the people of its federation and will continue to take bold steps to achieve the goal.
The Department of Citizen Security was established to mark a pivotal moment in the nation’s ongoing efforts to build a peaceful and resilient society.
