Dominica: Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit met with the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday, May 06, 2025 in Washington DC, US. The meeting included discussions over the island’s security, economic growth and various other key issues.
Reportedly, the Prime Minister Skerrit participated in the significant gathering alongside other heads of government who represented the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and The Bahamas. The main purpose of the meeting was to foster mutual interests and strengthen the collaborative efforts between the United States and the Caribbean region.
The key topics that were included in the discussions were about ensuring security across the region, promoting economic progress and providing assistance for long-term development in island nations with small populations. Dominica’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Business, Trade and Energy – Dr. Vince Henderson was also present at the meeting.
The OECS heads of delegation was led by the Chairman of OECS Authority and Prime Minister of Saint Lucia – Philip J. Pierre. The meeting also concentrated majorly on preserving and strengthening the relationship between the OECS and the United States. Both nations explored key issues and opportunities for deeper cooperation.
Discussions majorly focused on economic cooperation, migration issues, security cooperation, along with the role and contribution of Caribbean nationals in the US diaspora, as well as the Cuban Medical programme.
This diplomatic engagement was part of the broader mandate of the OECS Authority to promote the collective interests of its Member States and to ensure that the voices of small island developing states continue to be represented at the highest levels.
Notably, in the absence of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, the Minister of Finance, Economic Development, Climate Resilience and Social Security – Dr. Irving McIntyre served as acting Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Skerrit described the meeting as extremely positive and constructive. He noted that security was high on the agenda. There is a commitment on the part of the United States government to help them and to work with them on the issue of security.
Also, illegal immigration was addressed with the Prime Minister that emphasised on Dominica’s alignment with the US on migration policies while advocating for greater facilitation of legal migration.
