St. Kitts and Nevis: Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis broke ground for the construction of a desalination plant to be located at the C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Park.
The ground-breaking ceremony underscored the commitment to find viable solutions to the longstanding issue of water scarcity in the country.
Reportedly, it is the second desalination plant that is being undertaken by the government, with the first plant which is near to its completion at Canada Estate.
The significant ground breaking ceremony was attended by the members of the Federal Cabinet which was led by the Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, senior government officials, staff of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and other important guests were also invited.
Prime Minister Drew also shared the photographs of the ceremony on his official social media handle and confirmed about the ceremony. He said that the Government broke ground on a 2-million-gallon desalination plant.
Notably, the desalination plant costed around $50 million. It is hard to be done otherwise the country would run out of water. Therefore, the government had to prioritise the specifications.
The water situation has occurred due to the decreased rainfall and increase in the temperatures and salt water intrusion to underground the wells and all as a result of the climate crisis.
It is one of the reasons, because of why they need climate justice as a cost for climate adaptation and is unbearable for small island developing states.
Adding further to his statement, PM Drew enlightened all that the previous government has done absolutely nothing to increase the availability and accessibility of water which was a great dismal failure.
Following this, any people congratulated the prime minister and extended their well wishes. A person with the username Wendy Knight that it is epic and he is sure that the naysayers will soon come discrediting it. This is a great proactive move by the government.
Another person, known as Zeke Percival praised PM Drew and said, great job referring to prime minister Dr. Terrance Drew and said that the government kept developing the water to awesome water is life.
